Title: Ignore the adult collectors and trust the kids!
Review: If you’re an adult that’s looking for “movie accurate sounds” getting this for yourself, or you have a child that builds Lego sets just to display them, this is clearly not for you. For my son, this set is a total win. Yes, it costs much more than other sets with similar amounts of bricks, but it is quickly becoming his favorite Lego set. I think the hate that I’m reading is seriously misplaced. If you have a kid with an imagination that actually “plays” with their Lego sets, this is perfect. I typically prefer “low tech” options for my kids, but the new features have only added another layer to why my son loves Lego. I hope they ignore the man-baby haters living in their parents’ basements and continue to build on this new platform, because they are just scratching the surface.

Title: You might need to buy another set
Review: Absolutely a fun set, works better/best when combined with another set with at least one other smart block included. You need 2 smart blocks and sets for the full experience with interaction between the blocks, close to $300 expensive but fun.

Title: Fun Interactive LEGO Star Wars Set with Smart Brick Sounds
Review: In theory I got this for my kids (4 and 7) but it was maybe more for me and my husband to geek out over. This is definitely a set for playing vs displaying. It’s a fairly quick build. 5 bags. I did the ship and my daughter (7) did the rebel and refueling stations, which was conveniently in a separate book. She didn’t require any assistance. The ship makes different noises when at rest vs when tipped side to side or front to back. It’s a cool effect. It also has a little lever you can pull to make laser noises which is the most fun I think. That’s also what my kids gravitated to the most. There’s also a refueling/repair station and the gas pump and hammer will make appropriate noises if you touch them to the smart brick. There’s also a small rebel outpost with a blaster that will launch little red “laser” studs at quite a distance. It does feel a little weird to be using laser noises with one thing and physical studs with no noise from another thing. It’s too bad they didn’t include something to make noises on the rebel side or have you launch physical studs out of the TIE fighter as well as the noise. (Personally I prefer just the noise because while the physical effects are cool, it’s hard to not lose the studs.)The brick works without the app, but I do recommend downloading it for one very important feature – volume control! If the whoosh and laser sounds start driving you a bit nuts, there are 3 volume levels to choose from. It starts at the highest level. I have mine set to medium because I think it does start out a bit too loud and low is a bit to quiet. But just to know there is some flexibility there for parents to are more bothered by noisy kids toys. And not with a switch the kid can just easily turn back up to max themselves like most kid toys that have volume control. The smart brick charges wirelessly on a little yellow plate. It seemed convenient at first but I quickly lost the brick because nothing was holding it there and someone must have bumped it off. Would be nice if there was a lid or more of a wall on the charging tray. I guess I have legos so maybe I’ll make one.I do hope they will make sets that just add more interactive tiles vs having you buy a new smart brick every time. I’m hopeful because they did that with the lego Mario sets. Once you had a Mario character you could buy extension sets that would work with it.Overall the smart brick is a fun gimmick and I hope to see more things coming out to interact with it in the future. I think any kid who is into the lego star wars universe is sure to get a kick out of it.

Title: “Smart” Brick
Review: Looks bad and the smart brick’s sounds are horrid. The sounds that Lego Soundwave makes sounds just like Soundwave from G1 Transformers but none of the noises the smart brick makes sounds like Star Wars and the volume is too loud for my liking. On the bright side, the build experience is fun and it is remarkably stable.
